How to Get Better Blog Rankings Tip #6
Backlinks! What are backlinks? Backlinks are links on other sites that lead back to your blog. Or website. Back links differ from reciprocal links in that they only point one way: to YOU! Reciprocal links on the other hand are links that go both ways. for instance: I link this blog to my other site: http://blogrankings.wordpress.com and then go to that site, and link it to this one: http://dnkstore.net/blog That would be a reciprocal linking. Reciprocal links are something you want to avoid. Mainly because Google has largely discounted the value of reciprocal links, and it will hurt your blog rankings. The main reason for that is: it has long been a favorite tactic of generating traffic. Today though, the term is 'authority', and the more backlinks you have coming into your site, the more authority (perceived) you have, and the better your ratings. One thing to keep in mind: Google, the world's largest Search Engine will discount your backlinks if they all come from the same web address. You want a variety of links, coming from as many different sites as you can manage. There are a number of ways to get backlinks, some more dubious than others. One of the current themes is 3-way linking. The basic technique involves setting up a membership site, getting a number of paid members, and then all members begin backlinking to each other in a 3-way link system. It works like this: Site A links to Site B, who in turn links to Site C. Site C then links back to Site A. The more members involved, the more backlinks everyone has, and the membership site owner is making a killing off the monthly fees! Am I against it? Not at all! However you should be aware of a few things. Like all techniques designed to blindside the search engines, sooner or later, it will cease to work. This is because the search engines have to provide quality search results to their users, or go out of business. Google didn't get to the top by returning low quality results! Therefore, they want to see links pointed your direction simply because people consider you an authority, not because you are part of a linking ring! That is the primary reason why I prefer to generate my links organically, and there are a number of ways to do it, with some being more effective than others. Social Networking sites are good, you can include links in your profile page, and sometimes in your "signature link" which is found at the end of every forum post, forum reply, and blog that you write. Article directories are great! You get the standard backlink value, plus the added traffic to your site based on the number of people who read your article. Leaving a comment at other blogs has been largely discounted by the Search Engines, but still generates traffic from comment readers if your comment is well written. There are hundreds more ways to get backlinks, but maybe that will give you a few ideas to start you off! |
